March Green Staff Update
On 15th Mar 2018
In recent weeks the Greens staff have nearly completed the construction of the 11th tee (Summer), There’s just a few finishing touches required to finish it off (infill the steps with rubber/resin, finish timber edges, add shrub border, level rear left corner with top soil, and seed areas out of play).
Trees near the tee have been removed to allow for extra light, improved access and to help reduce leaf and branch litter falling on to the tee and tee bank. The plan is to bring the tee in to play in May in time for the main playing season. The tee is considerably larger than the previous tee, so this should help with wear and it becoming a men and ladies tee.
The 7th fairway bunkers have come along in the last week or so, and will hopefully be finished in the next couple of weeks. The weather and ground conditions have held this project up. Many tonnes of material came from an area between 3,4 & 7, which was waste material from previous projects. The material helped fill in and reshape the two original fairway bunkers, but has been problematic due to its poor quality. The two bunkers have now become three and they have been reduced in size to make them a little more manageable. They may be smaller but the difficulty in reaching the green from them should have increased by their shape and depth.
During the recent period of snowfall and cold weather the Greens Staff were able to remove and prune trees, which required attention- A conifer between the 5th & 6th holes (summer numbers) had a snapped branch hung up in the tree, which required removing. The difficulty was removing the branch because of where it was situated and its size, so the solution was to remove the tree. Pruning and removal of a few trees was also carried alongside and in front of the 10th men’s tee to help with light and to allow greater use of the whole tee. Overhanging Laurel branches, shrubs and trees were also cut back behind the 14th tee to improve play-ability and aesthetics.
We are now nearing the end of the 2017/18 winter months, so it will good to see some growth, the reduction and removal of the stakes and string and the course switching back to the summer course. The priority is to complete maintenance week (fingers crossed for favourable weather next week) and as long ground conditions are suitable the summer course will be reintroduced before Easter.
Due to the weather conditions of late and the cold weather forecast over the weekend, growth is a few weeks behind than normal, so please be aware the course will take a little longer to spring in to action.
